A portrait of a dream
My theme for this was Southern California outdoor life but not just limited to that. I wanted to show California from a completely different way than expected when someone brings up the theme “Southern California.” Being from Texas, when anyone mentions California they think of fast life, packed highways and tons of movie stars, friends and random weirdo people all thinking they’re on top of the world. I wanted to instead, show it from a lonely perspective. I wanted to show how there are so many people doing so much just to get by that at times we all lose our identity and when compared to the nature and beauty Southern California has to offer we get lost and when put into perspective, are pretty insignificant. I wanted to exaggerate the surrealistic life California creates as much as possible so I shot the entire thing with a plastic Holga lens that I modded to fit my Canon 1D Mark III, which explains the soft, dreamy feel of the photographs, as well as the harsh vignette and light leaks. All of that was done in camera and not in post, though unpredictable it was completely intentional. I lit the subject to give what contrast I could to the photo and create highlight and separation from subject to background. Hope you enjoy it, I don’t normally explain myself in these entries, but this one seemed different. Who knows?? Be sure to watch the video, for a bit easier read on the dream-like photos.
i like the photos you ended up choosing. i really like the way the series turned out. definitely includes some new favorite photos.
